From the author of A Greater World
In 1875, 18-year-old would-be poet, Jack Brennan, runs away from home to avoid being pushed into the priesthood. Life soon looks rosy for Jack when he lands the teaching job he's always dreamed of and meets the love of his life, Eliza Hewlett. But his world is shattered when Mary Ellen, his landlord's daughter, falsely accuses him of fathering the child she is expecting.
Jack and Eliza decide to escape to America. As they are about to sail, Jack is arrested and dragged from the ship, leaving Eliza alone en route to New York with only a few shillings in her pocket. Desperate and helpless, Jack is forced into marrying the woman he despises.
How will Eliza cope alone and penniless in New York? Can Jack make a new life amid the ruins of his hopes and dreams? Will the lovers meet again?

Once again, Clare Flynn has brought me into the lives of two people. The writing is such that I felt a personal closeness to the characters, two young people in 1875ish who fall in love and are separated by circumstances beyond their control. The book almost serves as an indictment, in my mind, against the practices of religion, in this case the Catholic church at the time. The sad part is the devotion of so many to a self-serving doctrine of blind obedience and untouchable Ecclesiastes wielding their power. I personally have nothing against religious worship, but reading this story is a great example of why I choose not to be a part of any organized religion. My faith in God is my own.
This rather sad story detailing the lives of these young lovers and the various impact the Catholic church has along the way is educational and interesting. I found it most informative as it related to women. I became angry as I read the stupidity of so many espousing rote doctrine.
I highly recommend to readers of historical fiction, romance and women's books.

Letters From a Patchwork Quilt edition by Clare Flynn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Quite well written with a good story line.
Thank you for a very great story! This story has my emotions and thoughts soaring. I would have never figured out how this story ended. Great writing!
This book keep my interest all the way through to the end. Even through i thought the book was about a quilt it isn't. It about two
Incredibly Creative Writing...Amazing unexpected twists and turns in the story-line. I was disappointed in the final outcome of the story; however, in reality, choices in life impact us throughout our lives. This novel strongly demonstrates the potential impact of parental cruelty on children until the end -of-their-lives. In this case, huge disappointments in spite of undying love. Deep, Deep Undying Love...
"Letters From A Patchwork Quilt" by Clare Flynn was an excellent novel. It's difficult to elaborate without giving away the story. It was very clever the way the author told the two main characters stories then intertwined them via the quilt.
I loved this story. It was poignant and truthful and not the fairytale ending of most stories but some how it reflected a truth of life that so many happy stories miss. It isn't always what we dream of and want from in life that we get. In fact, it rarely is. Yet, how we handle the situations of our lives is what defines us. Do we in the end make a happy life or a bad and lonely one. This book deals with those issues in ways few authors of today do. I applaud her courage in tackling a difficult subject with such grace and dignity.
I really enjoyed the author's other two novels and was looking forward to reading this.
I'm having a hard time writing a review without giving away a bunch of spoilers! Suffice it to say, the story and characters were well developed and well written. The story was well paced and there were some unexpected turns to it. When I finished, I really had to think hard about how the story would have turned out if it had gone the way I'd wanted it to at the beginning. An interesting question to ponder upon completion as Jack turned out much differently than I had initially expected.
All in all, a very well written book, well edited, and I really recommend it.
